Nikon announced that it is purchasing RED, a high-end cinema camera company, for an undisclosed sum. The camera giant, which like most of the photography industry has struggled in recent years, said in a statement that RED would become a wholly-owned subsidiary of its company. RED was founded in 2005 and its cameras have since been used in famous productions, including SGame vs. Peaky Blinders And Captain Marvel — a market that Nikon plans to expand into with this acquisition. The move could benefit both parties, said RED President Jared Lange Shared on Facebook: “This strategic partnership brings together Nikon’s extensive history and expertise in product development and image processing know-how, as well as optical technology and user interface with RED’s revolutionary digital cinema cameras and award-winning technologies.” RED’s 2018 attempt to expand on its own (into smartphones, at least) was short-lived, and the products were quickly discontinued.
Interestingly, RED filed a lawsuit against its new owner in 2022, claiming that Nikon intentionally used RED’s patented data compression technology in its Z9 camera. Nikon, in turn, argued the legitimacy of RED’s patents before the two companies agreed to separate.
