Lil Mama admits she’s “depressed” after her 2009 VMA incident

Lil Mama admits she was depressed after crashing Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ VMA performance.

The rapper spoke about the aftermath of the accident during an interview on “The Jay Hill Podcast.” It’s been fifteen years, and the “Lip Gloss” rapper hasn’t been able to live in the moment.

Lil Mama shares how the consequences caused her depression

The 35-year-old said black leaders in the media added fuel to the fire. She called it “propaganda.”

“I had to deal with publicity, which is basically journalists from the likes of Wendy Williams to the radio stations, or The Breakfast Club, or even back then, Ed Lover was there,” she said.

“He was giving gossip. She wasn’t giving leadership, she wasn’t giving camaraderie,” Lil Mama added.

The actress was 20 years old at the time.

“I was hurt, I was depressed. I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ You’ve got everyone telling you you’re doing something bad. People who point at you say, “What did you do?”

She’s reconciling with Alicia Keys and Jay-Z

In March 2023, the former America’s Best Dance Crew judge publicly embraced Alicia Keys at an event for the Teyana Taylor film “One Thousand and One.”

Jay-Z shared that he has no hard feelings toward the rapper on Twitter Spaces in 2021, as previously reported.

“naturally [we forgive her]. Let’s go. Do not do it. This is our sister. “Man, we love it,” the rapper said. “I don’t advise people to jump on other artists’ stage, but we don’t wish her any harm.”

At the time, Lil Mama took to Instagram to share her gratitude for the billionaire’s words.

“I appreciate hearing that part of the past [night’s] Conversation.” She shared. “That’s always been my attitude, love. Love to both my older brother and older sister and my city. It is telling for all of us as a society to hear these words from our legendary leaders.

Despite the backlash Lil Mama received in 2009, she has gone on to do some amazing things in her career. I’ve gotten starring roles in films. Notably, critics praised her portrayal of the character Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in the VH1 biopic “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story” in 2013.
