Rivian customers can now order an adapter to take advantage of Tesla’s extensive network of Superchargers in North America, making it the second automaker to do so after Ford.
Company Announce On Monday, it will begin shipping adapters to Rivian owners — one per VIN — “this spring” for free, though it has not said whether it will eventually charge a fee. Ford was the first to begin offering so-called North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters last month for free. Ford will start charging $230 for converters after June 30.
Rivian hasn’t said whether it will offer existing customers the adapter for free or how much it will cost to order.
Almost every major automaker has announced NACS compliance for some or all of their upcoming electric vehicles since Tesla first announced that it would open access to its charging technology in late 2022. The adapters serve as a stopgap for customers who buy (or have already bought) EVs that rely On the previously dominant charging front, the Combined Charging System (CCS). Most automakers have announced that future electric cars will incorporate Tesla’s charging technology into future vehicles.
For example, Rivian’s current R1S SUV and R1T truck will be produced with built-in Tesla Charing technology next year. Rivian’s next-generation vehicles, which it just unveiled earlier this month, will also include a Tesla charging port. The R2 SUV will start charging with a NACS charging port in 2026, while the smaller R3 hatchback will come later. (Although there is some panic online already where Rivian Choose this port mode.)
Rivian says existing owners will get a notification on their car’s screen with a QR code to scan where they can reserve the adapter.
Making the Tesla Supercharger network more accessible to owners means they now have 15,000 new fast chargers they can plug into. Rivian is also building its own network of fast charging stations, which it calls the Rivian Adventure Network. The company said Monday that it currently has 424 of these chargers in operation at 70 stations across 22 states.
