It’s a good time to do some spring cleaning of your mug cabinet. Thursday Nestlé Announce the summons Nearly half a million Starbucks cups.
The recalled cups were sold online and in stores from November 2023 through January 2024, and were manufactured by Nestlé USA. The metal mugs were available during the holidays as part of gift sets sold at Target and Walmart.
According to the recall announcement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the cups pose a risk of overheating. If heated in the microwave or filled with hot liquid (as is often the case), the product may overheat or even break. At least 12 cups have broken due to overheating, and 10 injuries have been reported from the cups, including burns and tears.
The defective mugs were sold in packaging labeled: Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mug, Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug, Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug, and Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says anyone who bought one of these mugs can return it to the store for a full refund or a gift card. If you’re a Starbucks fan, it’s not unlikely that you own at least one reusable cup from the coffee company, as there’s been a greater incentive in recent months to take a reusable cup home from the store. It’s good that Starbucks is expanding its efforts to reduce the massive waste of single-use cups, but not if we get burned in the process.
Earlier this year, Starbucks explained in a press release that its bring-your-own-cup program is “part of a larger cultural movement the company is leading to shift toward reusable materials . . . making it easier for customers to use their own personal cups for every visit.” .
As for returning the recalled cups, consumers do not need a receipt to get a full refund, according to the recall notice.
