Musk’s xAI is open source GROC-1 The model, which runs its own chatbot, in mid-March. Just a few weeks earlier, the CEO had filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman, accusing them of chasing profits and abandoning their nonprofit mission. Musk was one of the early backers of OpenAI and funded its operations when it was in its infancy. He claimed in his lawsuit that OpenAI was developing generative AI “to maximize Microsoft’s profits, not for the benefit of humanity.” He said it was a “flagrant betrayal of the Founding Agreement.”

But in response to his claims, OpenAI said there was “no founding agreement, or any agreement at all with Musk” to open source its technology.
