Whether you’re just setting up your first Amazon Fire TV device or you’re a life-long Fire TV user, there are many helpful tips that aren’t well documented. Here’s a look at some great remote control shortcuts, settings tweaks, and more.
Quick access menu
Long press the Home button on your remote to bring up the Amazon Fire TV’s handy, hidden quick access menu.
Once you open it, you can switch profiles in a snap, open the full list of apps, put your Fire TV to sleep, access the screen mirroring feature, and navigate to the settings menu.
Once you get the hang of it, you’ll never go back — especially when it comes to opening the full app menu and quickly diving into the different settings.
Dialogue enhancer
Speaking of the settings section, it includes a cool feature that makes understanding the dialogue easier. Go to the gear icon on the far right of the home screen or simply use the quick access trick above. Once in Settings, head to Display & Sound, then Advanced Sound, then enable Dialogue Enhancer.
This feature works great to enhance spoken portions of movies and TV shows that might otherwise be drowned out by overly enthusiastic soundtracks.
Install apps from your phone or computer
If you need to install a bunch of Amazon Fire TV apps at once, doing so via the proper Fire TV interface is a cumbersome experience at best.
Fortunately, you can install apps remotely from other devices. Head to the web-based version of the Fire TV App Store, and you’ll get an easier-to-browse selection of compatible apps and games.
On each app’s landing page, you’ll notice a “Deliver to:” drop-down menu below the app icon. Simply pull it down, select the Fire TV device you want to send the app to, and press the Deliver button. After a few moments, the app will appear on your chosen Fire TV.
Restart your Fire TV from your couch
You may notice from time to time that the Fire TV interface and loading times can become a bit slow. But it generally only takes a quick reboot to speed up the backup process.
Instead of searching behind your TV for the power cord, simply hold down the Select and Play/Pause buttons on the remote for a few seconds until your Fire TV reboots. It helps to remove cobwebs more often.
Plug in headphones for private listening
My family sleeps with all the bedroom doors open, which makes being a night owl quite a challenge for me. Fortunately, the Fire TV supports Bluetooth connections, allowing for the use of headphones.
Head to Settings, then Controllers and Bluetooth Devices, then Other Bluetooth Devices to set up the connection. You can also connect Bluetooth-enabled keyboards to make entering app passwords much faster than using an on-screen keyboard.
