Amazon, the world’s largest retail entity, has canceled “Just Walk Out” checkouts at stores in the United States. The move from Jeffrey Bezos’ shopping empire was first announced on InformationThis was later confirmed by the company to be true.

Amazon is rethinking its retail strategy

The ‘Just Walk Out’ option used by the supermarket giant has been phased out and will be replaced with scanners attached to the carts. This new system will replace the system currently in place at more than 130 retail locations in the United States and will be called “Dash wagon“.

Those who spend their hard-earned money at these stores will no longer be tracked by a series of cameras that collect the total amount a consumer gets in their grocery cart and link it to their Amazon account.

The Seattle-based company acquired Whole Foods in 2017 in a massive $13.7 billion deal, and also operates Amazon Go in several retail environments across the United States.

A deciding factor in moving away from this system was the cost of implementing it, and some labor disputes made implementing systems remotely a significant challenge. Amazon also said grocersaid the move was driven by consumer needs, saying that those who shop in stores “wanted the ability to easily find products and deals nearby, view their receipts while shopping, and see how much money they saved while shopping around the store.”

On the Dash Cart websitethe retail empire hopes the shopping experience will ensure “faster, more convenient shopping” and help consumers make “the most” of their grocery budget by saving “money through real-time discounts and deals, and an on-screen receipt for you to track your spending.”

“Not everything you do in grocery needs to be reinvented,” said Tony Hogget, Amazon’s head of global grocery stores. “There are proven things that grocers do. But you don’t really know about them until you’ve been in the industry for a long time.” Hogget will also tell The Information that Locations offering Dash Cart will be upgraded to “Version 2” locations for Amazon’s grocery empire ambitions.

on Q4 earnings call CEO Andy Jassy would say, “If you want to meet as many grocery needs as we do, you have to have a large physical presence. That’s what we’ve been trying to do with Fresh for several years. We’ve been testing the second iteration of our new format in A few locations near Chicago, and a few locations in Southern California.”

It remains to be seen whether this old-fashioned approach to customers being responsible for their own purchasing decisions rather than automated self-service will be fruitful for Amazon, but that’s the path Jassy and Hogg are embarking on.
