Engadget confirmed these findings in our own testing of Meta’s image generator. Claims for “Asian man with white girlfriend” or “Asian man with white wife” resulted in photos of Asian couples. When asked about a “diverse group of people,” Meta AI created a grid of nine white faces and one person of color. There were several occasions when it generated a single result that reflected the prompt, but in most cases it failed to accurately depict the prompt.

Google’s Gemini image generator has temporarily halted its ability to create images of people after it over-corrected it for the sake of diversity with response prompts about historical figures. Google said its internal safeguards failed to take into account situations where various results were inappropriate.
Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The company has previously described Meta AI as being in an “experimental” stage and therefore vulnerable to errors. Meta AI has also struggled to accurately answer current events and public figures.
