Apple News is testing a game somewhat similar to NYT Connections

[ad_1]

Apple News is testing a new game for iOS 17.5 called Quartiles, which requires players to organize a grid of 20 syllables into 5 four-syllable words. spotted before Gadget HacksQuartiles’ interface looks a lot like the New York Times’ latest publication, Connections. Did Apple News cover the New York Times?

Well, quatrains aren’t exactly like connectives, where you organize 16 words into four cohesive four-word categories. Maybe it’s closer to something like Boggle, where your ability to put words together from their components is tested. But there’s something about finding groups of four that we seem to find really tempting these days – Connections is now the second most popular game in the Times, after Wordle.

Last year, Apple added crossword puzzles and mini crossword puzzles for Apple News+ subscribers. Although it may seem strange that the news aggregator would continue to invest in games, that is exactly what has been working for The New York Times. When the newspaper bought Wordle in 2022 for an undisclosed seven-figure sum, the purchase brought in “tens of millions” of new users in just one quarter. Over the past few months, Times data showed that users spent more time playing its games than reading the news.

Apple is only testing Quartiles, which doesn’t mean they will definitely appear in iOS 17.5. But since the New York Times now runs a game studio, it’s not a bad idea for Apple to produce some new games, preferably square ones.
