Technology companies are looking for unprecedented numbers of computer science professionals — many with Ph.D.s — to build and apply generative AI systems. But such talent is in limited supply.
Five of the largest AI employers — Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI — are hiring for 501 generative AI jobs between them, according to their company job boards. , as well as 1,725 people in the broader field of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Here are some highlights from different company job boards:
- dead It employs 174 people to discover and apply new generative AI technology. Some of these positions fall within the company’s AR/VR suite, suggesting that future headsets may generate a video scene within the user’s view of the world. Meta’s Foundational AI Research (FAIR) group is hiring for 44 positions.
- Google The company is hiring for 75 positions directly focused on generative AI, 23 of which require or prefer a doctoral degree.
- Microsoft It employs 134 people to research and apply generative AI. A search for general roles for artificial intelligence and machine learning resulted in 240 listings.
- OpenAI It employs 73 R&D and engineering roles, 33 of which are for researchers who work directly on generative models (including safety and alignment), while 31 of the roles are for engineers who build products and features around the models. OpenAI does not specify educational requirements in its job listings.
- apple It has been slower to adopt generative AI than its peers, but the company appears to be correcting course now. It is currently trying to hire 368 people for jobs in natural language processing, reinforcement learning, computer vision, applied research, and AI infrastructure roles. At least 54 distinct sites focus, at least in part, on generative AI systems such as chatbots or video/image generation. Most roles require a master’s or doctoral degree in computer science or a related field.
These are just some of the big players. Small startups are looking for talent too.
Many AI job listings place great importance on experience building models and infrastructure. Building, training, and guiding models—especially generative AI models—rely on trial and error, and every trial and error costs money, so it’s important to have people who have gone through similar processes at other companies.
US universities have 2,188 doctoral degrees in computer science, according to the 2022 National Science Foundation Survey of earned doctoratesA slight decrease from 2,194 from the previous year. Only 205 PhD recipients in 2022 specialize in AI, compared to 165 the previous year. All of these numbers are rising, experts say, and more than 2,500 computer scientists are likely to earn doctorates in 2024.
“Technology jobs have specialized training and education needs that continue to evolve due to advances such as generative artificial intelligence,” Deloitte analysts wrote in their report. Technology industry forecast for 2024. “Reallocating talent pools will likely mean partnering with universities and engineering schools; working more closely with local technology schools, vocational schools, and community colleges; and supporting national institutions that promote STEM fields.
