Google is reversing course and bringing Gemini AI to the regular Pixel 8

[ad_1]

Google will be bringing Gemini to its Pixel 8 smartphones after all. the phone It will include Gemini Nano, a version of the model designed to run locally on personal devices. This follows the successful launch of and In January.

The Pixel 8 features the same Tensor G3 chip as the Pro, which is designed to accelerate AI performance. So the overall experience should be similar with both devices. It will come in the upcoming Pixel Features Drop, but only as a developer preview for now. Google wants to collect feedback and make sure everything runs smoothly on the phone with slightly lower specs.

This is a somewhat surprising change for Google. The company originally said that the Pixel 8 Gemini cannot be dealt with on the device Due to “hardware limitations”, despite having the same chip as the Pro model. The main difference between the two phones is the RAM allocation, which doesn’t seem like a deal breaker when it comes to running AI on the device. It seems that Google has also come up with this line of thinking.

So what can you do with this thing? The company is expanding two features that leverage LLM, and both tools are available to Pro users. The Recorder app will get an improved Gemini-powered summarization feature that runs locally on the device. A similar tool already exists, but it requires a network connection. Once Gemini Nano is on board, data will no longer need to be sent to the server. As one might expect, this feature creates summaries of recorded conversations.

The Gemini Nano will also power Gboard’s smart reply suite. This software suggests responses to messages and is also aware of the context of conversations. It started as a WhatsApp exclusive but has recently expanded to include Line and KakaoTalk. Google promises that “more messaging apps” will add support in the coming months. Oddly enough, Google Messages is not an early adopter of this platform. The Gemini Nano is used to power the on-device Magic Compose feature in Messages on the Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung S24, but Google hasn’t announced whether that specific tool will be coming to the standard Pixel 8.

This has been a big week for Gemini, with Apple reportedly in talks to bring . This is like Coca-Cola and Pepsi suddenly opening a soft drink store together. However, Gemini has recently come under fire for creating . The photo creation feature is still temporarily down as the company continues to work out these glitches.
