There’s nothing like relaxing and sipping a refreshing drink. Herbal mocktails are the perfect drink for anyone avoiding (or reducing) their alcohol intake. There are lots of delicious options and because it’s alcohol-free, even kids can eat it themselves.

These drink recipes feature fruity and herbal flavors that not only taste great but are great for you! You can serve it cold as a refreshing summer drink or enjoy it all year round. They also make a great addition to a weekend brunch!

What is a mocktail?

You may have already heard of them, but in case you haven’t been drinking, mocktails are non-alcoholic cocktails. So instead of putting some vodka or tequila in a sparkling drink, we use fruit juices and mineral water. You’ll find all kinds of recipes online for everything from mojito mojitos to virgin piña coladas.

These non-alcoholic drinks can be prepared in all kinds of flavors. They usually consist of simple syrup (such as grenadine), seltzer or soda, fruit, and sometimes herbs. Here are some additional ingredients you can test in your homemade mocktail.

  • Sweeteners such as raw honey, maple syrup, or stevia
  • Fruit juices such as watermelon, pomegranate, apple juice, or pineapple juice
  • Shrub made with apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar and herbs
  • Herbal myrrh
  • A little spice of ginger or hot pepper

Herbal infusion

There are many ways to prepare healthy and delicious drinks, and herbs are one way to enhance the health benefits. Herbal beer helps with digestion and can improve gut health. You can make your own herbal bitter tincture and add a little to your mocktail to balance the sweet flavor. This makes the perfect after-dinner digestive tonic!

Here are the herbs I used in the following recipes and why they are so amazing.

  • ginger Ginger is a little spicy, as it is a beneficial herb for the digestive system. It’s warm, increases circulation, and reduces inflammation. It is also antiviral, helps relieve menstrual cramps, and helps treat nausea.
  • basil – Although basil tastes great on a caprese salad, it has some delicious health benefits too! Basil reduces inflammation, protects the liver and blood vessels, and boosts the immune system. Studies have also shown that it has anti-cancer and anti-diabetic benefits.
  • Roselle Hibiscus contains a high percentage of vitamin C and other nutrients, and has a tart, fruity flavour. It strengthens and cools irritated tissues, helps strengthen the immune system, and moves stuck-on mucus. It helps treat infections in areas such as the liver, stomach, urinary tract, and uterus.
  • Lemon grass – Antibacterial, antifungal, reduces inflammation, and helps the body respond healthy to fever. It also has a wonderful lemon scent!
  • Nettle plant Nettle is a powerful food source that contains many minerals. You’ll find vitamins A, C, E, K, riboflavin, thiamin, and a whole host of minerals. It helps nourish and revitalize the body.

Add garnish

What’s a fancy drink without some garnish? I like to use lemon or lime slices to garnish the glass. You can also use fresh cranberries, other berries, or pieces of fruit. Mint leaves also add a nice touch to these mocktail recipes.

Cranberry and ginger mocktail

Tart cranberries combine with spicy ginger in this fizzy cocktail.

  • Add the cranberries and ginger to the water and leave it on the fire until it boils.

  • Turn off the heat and let it steep with the lid on for 10-15 minutes.

  • Strain and mix in honey.

  • Let it cool completely.

  • Add sparkling water just before serving.

Basil Citrus Mocktail

Delicious basil pairs well with sweet citrus. Make this recipe using oranges, tangerines, or even grapefruit.

  • Use your hands to crush the basil until its juices are released.

  • Add the basil, orange zest, and hot water to the mason jar. You don’t want the water to boil, just hot enough to draw out the flavors from the fresh ingredients.

  • Cover the jar with a lid and let it steep for 10-15 minutes or until cool.

  • Filter and add orange juice.

  • Allow the mixture to cool completely in the refrigerator and mix with sparkling mineral water just before serving.
