DIY sandalwood tanning oil

DIY tanning oil

Natural sunscreen ingredients

This is where things get a little controversial and ambiguous. For more than a decade, researchers have been testing raspberry seed oil and other natural oils to determine their sun protection factor (SPF) values. Test results showed amazing SPF values ​​of 25 SPF or even 50 SPF against UV rays.

However, scientists have recently pointed out flaws in these studies. They were performed in a laboratory (not on actual skin) and did not follow generally accepted SPF testing guidelines.

A 2021 study found that raspberry seed oil is more similar to SPF 2.6 (not 25-50). Other oils tested included carrot seed, coconut and wheat germ oils which ranged from 0 to 2.8 sun protection factor (SPF). The researchers commented that anything less than 1 SPF provides no sun protection at all.

Another 2010 study looked at the sun protection factor (SPF) of both carrier oils and essential oils. The carrier oils ranged from 2 to 8 sun protection factor (SPF), and the base oils from 1 to 7 sun protection factor (SPF). Olive oil and peppermint essential oil had the highest rates. But not so fast! This study was not performed on human skin, and even the authors state that their results did not determine final SPF values ​​when used on the skin.

Skin product tests of carrot seed oil showed a sun protection factor (SPF) value of approximately 7. However, carrot seed oil was combined with other ingredients for testing.

Is there such a thing as natural SPF oils to help with safe tanning?

Tanning lotion is safer

While some of the oils used here may or may not have slight measurable SPF protection, they do have other skin benefits. When combined with homemade suntan oil, it helps protect and nourish the skin and aids in vitamin D production. It is important to note that these are not a substitute for regular sunscreen.

  • olive oil – Contains oleic acid which supports clearer skin and phytosterols to attract moisture. Helps repair sun damage and soothes dry skin. It also contains high levels of squalene, which protects skin cells and has anti-aging properties. Olive oil has been traditionally used in Mediterranean countries as a natural skin protectant for a darker tan.
  • Avocado oil – Rich in vitamins A, B, E, proteins and amino acids. It increases skin collagen. Avocado oil is also high in UV-protective carotenoids to help protect against sun damage.
  • Carrot seed oil – It contains a high percentage of vitamin A, beta carotene, and vitamin E to protect against ultraviolet rays. This is not the same as infused carrot root oil (which is an orange oil) or carrot seed essential oil. Cold-pressed carrot seed oil has a naturally dark green color and resembles olive oil.
  • Raspberry seed oil – It contains a high percentage of antioxidant vitamins E and A. Raspberry is also a lighter oil and does not feel greasy when used.

I also added Bronze mica powder For a subtle bronze glow, but you can omit it if you don’t have it or don’t want to use it.

Add essential oils

I have used some lavender and sandalwood essential oils for their skin benefits and scent. Indian sandalwood smells sweeter, but Australian sandalwood is less expensive. Because sandalwood is in danger of extinction though it is important to buy from an ethically harvested source!

You can use different essential oils here or omit them completely if desired. If you replace it with a different essential oil, it is really important not to use it That’s phototoxic! Some essential oils such as cold-pressed bergamot, lemon and lime can cause very serious skin burns if used before exposure to the sun.

Important: Safety of exposure to sunlight

This is not a sunscreen, but a mild sun protection recipe. It’s important to test with short periods of time in the sun to find what works for your body and skin type. I share what works best for me, but adjust it to suit your skin type and desired result.

Of course, all the usual disclaimers apply: sunburn is never healthy and should be completely avoided. You should not spend long periods in the sun, especially if your skin is very sensitive.

If you can’t tan, this recipe won’t magically help you tan. I do not advocate regular tanning in an electric bed, and only use it when exposed to moderate, natural sunlight. Consult a dermatologist if you are unsure about any of these ingredients or want to know if this recipe is beneficial for your skin specifically.

  • Mix all the oils and mica powder (if using) and store in a dark colored glass jar. If you decide to replace coconut oil with olive oil, store it in a jar instead, as it will not work with the pump.
